Didik Nini Thowok Artist Residency

About The Residency

Didik Nini Thowok, master dancer from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, is an artist in residency at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) on April 24 to May 5, 2017. During the residency, Didik is engaging in various activities to share his artistry with CalArts community. The artist residency is produced by Ratri Anindyajati, (MFA 2017 Creative Producing at CalArts School of Theater), intended to create pathways of sustainable and balanced collaboration by connecting Indonesian artists with international contemporary artists at CalArts and beyond.

Presentation at CalArts World Music and Dance Festival 2017

Dance presentation at CalArts’ annual World Music and Dance Festival, on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 7:00pm at the campus’ outdoor venue, the Wild Beast. At this presentation Didik will be joined by acclaimed traditional Javanese dancer Maria Darmaningsih.

Shikhandi Lab Workshop

Didik will engage in an exploratory workshop with CalArts artists: contemporary puppet artist Miranda Kahn, animator and video designer Narae Kim, musician and composer Sean Hayward, scenic designer Carlo Maghirang and costume designer Jocelyn Dimaya. The workshop is exploring the theme of gender fluidity through an excerpt of Shikhandi, a cross-gender character from the epic story Mahabharata. The work in progress is being presented at the end of the workshop as part of CalArts’ New Works Festival 2017, which supports the creation of new works by CalArts community.
